Everything I Left Unsaid by Molly O’Keefe

It’s time for some romance! I’m going to feature some amazing stories by gifted writers that I consider to be auto reads. Molly O’Keefe is a writing force who I discovered a few years ago. Her characters are authentic and her stories will rip you to shreds before putting you back together again. 

The story is told from the first person point of view of Annie McKay, a young woman who is obviously hiding out from something or someone. She’s living in a camping trailer in a rundown trailer park near Cherokee, North Carolina. Her personal circumstances are revealed slowly through conversations she has with a man she only knows as Dylan who was the voice on the other end of a cell phone that was left in the camper by the previous renter. We also get Dylan’s perspective in a third person narrative making this an intriguing exploration of two very compelling characters.

I loved this incredibly complex and compelling story of two people drawn to each other by chance. Through their conversations, we learn more than just the essential details about them as their anonymity seems to give them license to open up and expose their vulnerabilities in a unique way. Their individual tragedies isolated them from the rest of the world but connected them to each other inexplicably. Their phone interactions were sexy and erotic, strengthening them over time.

There were times when I couldn’t understand either character but ultimately it all began to make sense. I became so emotionally invested in them individually and as a couple. The story was riveting, exciting, frustrating and oddly romantic. It took me days to stop thinking about them.

The book ends with a frightening cliffhanger (we were forewarned by the author) so make certain you have the next book queued to begin immediately after this one. Annie and Dylan’s relationship is unlike any other I’ve read, a good thing. While this is Annie’s story to tell, I thought it brilliant to weave in Dylan’s perspective. The contrasts added complicating layers, which deeply immersed me into the story. Loved it!
