Historical Romance

The Laird’s Willful Lass by Anna Campbell

Fergus Mackinnon became the Laird of Achnasheen in the Western Highlands of Scotland at the very young age of nine. Almost 20 years later, he’s very much respected on all fronts within his clan. He’s extremely confident and expects his decisions to be law and his people never question his rule. That is until he comes upon a carriage accident and rescues Marina Lucchetti, an Italian artist there to paint pictures of the region for a commissioned sponsor. She’s independent and talented, answering to no one, including her father who is traveling with her. When she and Fergus collide, it’s pretty explosive.

Fergus always believed that his mate would be someone who would obey and respect his decisions and points of view, without question. When he found himself inexplicably attracted to Marina, it was confusing. She was equally as appalled at her feelings for someone who was the antithesis of her ideal man. And therein lies the rub as these two grappled with their feelings. I really liked both of them for who they were and their commitment to staying true to self. It was delightful seeing both of them off their game and figuring out what to do with these feelings they couldn’t explain.

One of the real treasures of this story was the authenticity of the characters. The dialects of both were well researched and I truly felt like I was “hearing” the Italian woman and the Scottish laird. The setting was also lush, beautifully described and an essential part of the story. While it may have taken too long for their relationship to develop (a bit angsty for me), it was lovely once it did. This was a beautiful story with two well-designed characters who were quite different from those typical of the era.
