Deal Breaker by Harlan Coben

Deal Breaker

This being Throwback Thursday, I thought it a great moment to introduce one of my favorite, older series. It was recommended by a mystery & suspense group whose members I trusted as I would have never chosen this title on my own. I will be forever grateful as Myron Bolitar is one of my most favorite fictional characters.

Myron Bolitar is new at being a sports agent but had the good fortune to sign the number one NFL quarterback draft choice, Christian Steele. Christian’s been drafted by the Titans whose owner, Otto Burke, is playing underhanded during the contract negotiations. Nude pictures of Christian’s missing girlfriend have surfaced and Otto is threatening to release them publicly unless Myron has his client agree to a pretty lousy deal. Christian’s girlfriend, Kathy Culver, is also the sister of Myron’s ex-girlfriend Jessica, who asks him to investigate. Kathy’s been missing for two years now. Could it get any more convoluted?

Myron is a potentially great character for this first book in the series. He has an interesting but mysterious background and lifestyle. His partner, Win, is a blue blood scary guy and his assistant, Esperanza, is a former wrestling star. His list of clients is equally colorful. The investigation takes many twists and turns with a few revelations along the way.

The investigation moved at the right pace and kept you guessing at each turn. It wasn’t easy to figure out the case but the clues were all there for the reader to deduce the ending. I figured it out near the end but still wasn’t sure.

I initially lowered my rating of this book because of what I thought a problem with the narrator. I listened to this on a road trip and at a certain section of the trek, I felt I was being lulled to sleep by him. However! I ended up loving the narrator with the next book! My lethargy had nothing to do with him…it was the rural route that put me to sleep as evidenced later with the same thing happening with other great narrators. Still does and I’ve resorted to playing rock music during that stretch of the road. This is a definite must read and on audio.

  1. I’m lol at you nodding off because of the rural route. Living in Indiana, nearly all of my routes are rural through cornfields. I’d never make it with a remotely dull narrator. I’m glad things picked up for you after all. I used to read Corben all of the time and still pick up his stand alones from time to time.

    1. The problem with that route is that it’s 2 hours of stressful interstate highway driving and then 2 hours of country, rolling hills driving. I find I get sleepy because of the Adrenalin drop about 1/2 hour after I hit the rolling hills. I then blast Bruno Mars and Jessie J.’s Bang Bang for the next 1/2 hour and then go back to my audiobook. Poor Jonathan Marosz got unfairly blamed😌

  2. I love Harlan Coben and love this series I haven’t read them all and still have some to read. I listen to his books back in my marathon days and went through quite a few of them. You brought back memories some physically painful ones. lol.
