Saturdays at the Café - Body

Saturdays at the Café is the a weekly feature hosted here to talk about and discuss the books I’ve discovered during the past week, added to my shelf and am excited about reading. They may be new/scheduled releases I’ve seen on NetGalley, at the library, or from publishers or they may be older titles my friends have reviewed and shared on Goodreads or blogs.

My Sister the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite – Marialyce @ yayareads wrote the review that was the tipping point for me to add this to my shelf. And, my library added it!

If Beale Street Could Talk by James Baldwin – Baldwin is one of my favorite writers and I want to read this now that the film has received Oscar nominations.

Severance by Ling Ma – Carol @ Bookaria reviewed this book and it connected with me.

Where She Lies by Michael Scanlon – Christopher @ Plucked From the Stacks put this British crime series on my radar. Can’t get enough of these!

The Next Girl by Carla Kovich – Berit @ Audio Killed the Bookmark reviewed a book later in this series and I had to read it. But, I always start from the beginning.

The Blue by Nancy Bilyeau – Jennifer ~ Tar Heel Reader reviewed this title, which has a porcelain exploration element. I collect porcelain demitasse cups and saucers so this was a no brainer.

The Last Resort by Steph Broadribb – Eva @ Novel Deelights reviewed a book later in this series and just raves about it. After reading the synopsis for the earlier books, I caved, especially when I got the first book for a song.

The Beautiful Strangers by Camille Di Maio – Tina @ Reading Between the Pages convinced me to add this book. I’d seen the title before and was curious so it didn’t take much of a nudge. I’m hoping to review on audio.

Don’t Wake Up by Liz Lawler – Eva @ Novel Deelights featured another book by this author and I stumbled upon this one. I hoping to get this for audio review.

The Liar’s Child by Carla Buckley – Deanna @ Dee’s Rad Reads and Reviews featured this as her Can’t Wait Wednesday title. I loved another book I’d read by the author and this one sounds SO good!

Until the Day I Die by Emily Carpenter – Stephanie @ Stephanie’s Novel Fiction gave this 5 stars for a new-to-me author. Another audio for review hopeful.

The Forgiving Kind by Donna Everhart – Stephanie @ Stephanie’s Novel Fiction struck again! I was able to get this one for audio review.

Dirty Little Secret by Jennifer Ryan – Kimberly @ Caffeinated Reader featured this book by an author who has a writing style I really like! It’s the first in a new series, too.

Kydd by Julian Stockwin – I recommended this for library purchase eons ago (they bought it!) and now can’t remember who featured the title. Let me know if it was you because this promises to be a great story.

Dear Rosie Hughes by Melanie Hudson – Just read the review by Mackey @ Macsbooks and see if you can resist. I dare you.

The Goodbye Café by Mariah Stewart – I received a request to review this third book in The Hudson Sisters series and I squealed! It’s one of my favorites and I’m up to date.

Home Cooking by Laurie Colwin – Rennie @ What’s Nonfiction? reviewed the follow up book to this one and highly recommended I start here. She assures me it’s perfect for the novice “chef.”

Leading Men by Christopher Castellani – Kyra @ Roots & Reads reviewed this book and even though she had some issues, I liked the idea of fact and fiction involving Tennessee Williams and Truman Capote. I have it for audio review.

Unwind by Neal Shusterman – Christina @ Recipe and a Read wrote a fantastic review of this dystopian novel. I gotta try.

In Dark Water by Leslie Tentler – Another squeal moment when the author offered this for review. Rarity Cove is one of my favorite series and I’d almost given up on seeing a third book.

Mindhunter by John Douglas and Mark Olshaker – One more from Rennie @ What’s Nonfiction? and I got the audiobook from the library. Can’t have enough true crime and this one’s all about profiling from one of the originators. I’m also going to check out the Netflix series, too.

 

Well, obviously I caught up with my blogosphere friends! I promised you last week this would be huge. Hope you like the change in format, too!

  7. Aww, thanks so much for tagging me, Jonetta! I hope you enjoy the books-I can’t recommend either of those authors highly enough! Emily Carpenter’s Weight of Lies is one of my favorite books if you like southern gothic fiction. And The Education of Dixie Dupree by Donna Everhart will break your heart. You have some great ones on her; I’ve added Dear Rosie Hughes and The Blue to my TBR this week too!

  9. Jonetta, You have some really good books in your lineup. I have Leading Men coming up this week and I have The Liar’s Child and The Blue on my short list.   12. Lots of great additions! I have Until The Day I Die on my kindle waiting to be read; I can’t wait to do so since I loved her other story The Weight Of Lies. And Unwind is a great read! I hope you will enjoy these.

  15. I’m glad I could give you not one but two this week!! I promise Laurie Colwin is a total delight and will make you feel better about your own cooking abilities, and it’s just a fun, happy thing to read. Mindhunter gets interesting eventually, not sure if you’ll have the experience I did and not particularly enjoy the earlier sections more heavily focused on his personal life, but if so just wait it out or skip ahead, it gets better.

    Can’t wait to hear what you think of them!

      1. Definitely try the show too, it was just like the book – took awhile to grow on me but I ended up liking it. Have you watched the new Netflix Ted Bundy series yet? I’m not finished with it but I want to find the book(s) it was based on. The details of his story never fail to amaze me.

        1. Oh, I forgot to mention I added the series to my Netflix list.

          You MUST read Ann Rule’s The Stranger Beside Me! She knew him, worked next to him, but used her insights to define him rather than make the story be about her relationship with him. It’s the best resource I’ve read over the years to truly understand this man. She nails him. Some are critical because she didn’t share more personal reflections (me, included at first) but later I came to appreciate how she didn’t make it about her. That, I think, would be a different book. Yes, I do plan to watch that series, too.

        2. I read it a couple of years ago! I did like it a lot, and I’m almost always happy when a writer telling a true story doesn’t make it all about them, even despite her closeness to her subject in that case. I wasn’t completely crazy about it because I felt like I still had a lot of questions afterward, I’m not sure if it’s because she did refrain from certain things or felt uncomfortable discussing them or what…I would still read something else about it. I’m curious about the two the journalists wrote that this new series is based on.

      1. I read a few of her Rizzole and Isles books, then discovered the TV show and realised I liked that more, haha! Although I do have another of her books on my shelf to read at some point. I can’t even think of any other medical thriller authors besides her and Lawler.
