Shameless by Lex Martin

Shameless

Brady Shepherd is a tattooist who also does body piercing at a parlor in Boston. He’s also temporarily helping out his parents with their landscaping business, hoping his brother returns from Texas to take over. However, when he gets a phone call that his brother and sister-in-law were killed in a terrible accident, Brady’s life is turned upside down as he goes to Texas to to gain control of their farm and one-year old orphan, Isabella. She’s being taken care of in the meantime by Katherine Duran, her young and beautiful nanny who also has many other business talents.

The tragedy that brings Brady to Texas underscores the entire story. He’s not only burdened by his grief over the loss of his brother but guilt over having argued with him about not returning to Boston and helping their parents. As he works tirelessly to keep the farm and business afloat, he’s also struggling with his attraction to Katherine, who is also receptive. In reality, she’s the backbone of the business, supplementing it with her line of natural body products she’s formulated. They work extremely well as a team so when their relationship turns personal, that feels natural as well despite the short timeframe.

There’s not a lot of drama, simply a slow buildup to the development of Brady and Katherine’s relationship as he finds himself moving further away from a return to Boston and the potential sale of the farm. It was lovely and sensual with baby Isabelle providing some adorable moments and comic relief as the three of them bond. I liked this couple who could have communicated better with each other about their true concerns (my one annoyance with the story) but never failed to express their true feelings about each other. I also loved the narrators as they so wonderfully captured the spirits and personalities of both Brady and Katherine and told the story nicely.

Overall, I enjoyed the story but you should know that it’s a spinoff of the Dearest series where Brady first appears. I would have loved getting his backstory but didn’t feel in the dark by not having read it first.
