The Lucy Kincaid series was selected as a group read in one of my Goodreads groups and we decided to read this trilogy first as the character’s early family background begins here. This is the second book in the No Evil Trilogy.
It’s Lucy Kincaid’s high school graduation moment and she’s not there when they call her name. Most of her family is in attendance and they quickly learn that they have every reason to be frightened. Unknown to them, she’s carried on an online relationship with who’s turned out to be a vicious predator and now he’s orchestrated her abduction. Exiled FBI Agent Kate Donovan knows him as Trask, knows what’s in store for Lucy: her online rape and eventual murder. Dillon Kincaid takes the lead to help profile this man and teams with Kate to uncover his true identity and location before his sister’s time is up.
I knew this would be a tough, awful story before I opened the book so I believed I was prepared. Not so much. Even though Brennan spares the graphic details, I still couldn’t shut down my imagination from being in Lucy’s head emotionally, experiencing her pain and humiliation, knowing that her family and the world was watching her degradation online. I also felt the desperation of those trying to find her as the countdown progressed while Lucy continued to be abused. It’s so well written, expertly weaving together the race to find Lucy, the search for her abusers identity and background and the pinpointing of the site where she was being held.
This was an exciting story for all the reasons above but also a cautionary tale for teens who think they can trust online relationships. The romance aspect suffers somewhat as Kate and Dillon’s interactions and developing feelings were a bit rushed. I really didn’t care, however, because I was more invested in Lucy’s rescue. Given what happened here, I’m dying to get started with the Lucy Kincaid series to see how she turns out and moves forward from this nightmare.
