Hidden

Vinnie’s romantic holiday did not go as planned. There was an assault, his companion was threatened and the police asked them to leave.

And when Vinnie returns to his police job in Manchester, things don’t get much better, as he finds himself at the heart of an investigation that stretches from Manchester to all corners of Europe. Women are being trafficked into the UK and forced into prostitution, and while the police are diligent in their enquiries, they seem to have a rogue in their midst.

As events unravel, the lines between good and bad, police and criminals, seem to become more and more blurred… and the stakes for all involved are getting higher.

Hidden is Book #3 in Roger Price’s the Badge and the Pen series, but it can equally be read as a novel in its own right. Existing fans of Vinnie and Christine are bound to love it, but Hidden is also perfect for crime and police fiction lovers, and anybody who loves a fast-paced, gripping story.

Inspiration by Roger A. Price

I’d been to London for a meeting with my agent as I was looking around for a new premise for my next Badge & the Pen novel. On my way home I grabbed a free Evening Standard at Euston station. The front page was all about successes in the capital against the growing problem of people trafficking and modern day slavery; be that forced servitude or enforced prostitution.

Medieval horrors in the modern age. As reassuring as it was to read of those successes, it was all too apparent that this was only the veneer to a far deeper and hitherto under-investigated problem. A truly Hidden evil.

I’d been gone from the police some nine years by now and had no experience of such crimes. I’m in no doubt that they were happening when I was serving, but the authorities were just not aware.

I’d already started writing Hidden, which had a generic working title, and wanted DI Vinnie Palmer and TV news reporter Christine Jones to face a formidable quarry/quarries so this seemed to be the perfect fit. It was topical, but also, so distasteful a crime that hopefully the reader would love to hate the antagonists and deride a serious amount of satisfaction when justice eventually prevailed.

I was keen not to focus too much on the actuals of the crimes and the victims in order not to make the narrative too lurid, so I aimed my spotlight on the investigation side and the chase to capture the bad guys. Always set against a countdown to more offences with varying problems and obstacles put in Vinnie and Christine’s way; including the usual quagmire of corruption and not knowing whom to trust.

  1. Great to know that the book can be read as a standalone. I’ve been reading a lot of second, third books recently and sometimes I feel a bit lost. It probably helps that the author is a retired police detective himself. Have you read the previous titles in the series?
