A woman is mysteriously abducted from a shopping mall. A month later, a bomb goes off in one of Atlanta’s neighborhoods housing Emery University and it’s hospital, the FBI and the CDC. Then, GBI Special Agent Will Trent and Medical Examiner Dr. Sara Linton find themselves in the middle of a dangerous confrontation on their way to assist with what they know is a catastrophic event. You just know these three situations are somehow connected but it is in no way obvious. What follows is one heck of an exciting story.
We waited three years for the follow up to the last book and I’ll wait another three if it’s as good as this one. The writing is astonishingly brilliant, perfectly paced with precision and so exciting I was almost too amped up to keep listening. The procedural element is one of the best I’ve ever seen and the scientific aspects were well researched. The bad guys weren’t just villainous but well characterized and relevant to current headlines. I’ve saved the best for last and that’s the relationship between Will & Sara. Slaughter didn’t just “tell” us about the depth of their feelings, she illustrated it in the most unique ways that sometimes took my breath away.
If you haven’t figured out yet that I loved this story, then the last bit I’ll share is about the narrator. I’ve listened to her deliver this and the Grant County series, so for me, she’s the voice of the stories. Even so, Kathleen Early outdid herself in this one. I don’t reread books (only one series to date) but I think I’ll be re-listening to this one. It’s that good and a fine piece of writing. It didn’t just live up to the hype, it far surpassed my exceptionally high expectations.

She’s my favorite author and I am in love with Will Trent, lol. I’m glad you loved this one too. I read her next book will be another Will Trent, so I’m glad we won’t have to wait so long, especially with that ending! Fantastic review, Jonetta!

Thank you, Stephanie💜 Oh, she’s one of my favorites, too! That’s great news about her next book. I now understand why she took such a long break because this book required so much research and attention. I kept seeing all the interim books and series and wanted to ask, “Where’s Will?”

I was so excited to see that too! I read it on her FB page-I think she said 2021, but that’s better than waiting 3 years. I understand now too. I did love The Good Daughter though; it’s my favorite of her standalones, but I sure did miss Will!!

Saw this on Amazon.. Should I get the entire series? Or this worked as a standalone?

Shalini, the brilliance of this story ties directly into the evolution and development of the recurring characters. Without having read the earlier books in the series, you’ll miss all the nuances of their history. That said, you’d still enjoy the story but not nearly as well as I probably did.

Following on from your last comment, Jonetta, I did enjoy the book very much despite the fact it was my first of the series, but I completely agree about missing the nuances. I much prefer to start a series from the beginning if possible.

Cathy, if you were to go back and read the series, you’d want to then reread this one. I’m glad you enjoyed it anyway!

I’m sure I would 🙂 I have the first couple on my kindle, it’s just finding the time…

And, you probably missed the significance of Amanda’s interactions with Will. There’s a huge history there, as well as with Faith and these women in command.

Perhaps audio might be a quicker way to catch up.

I’m not a rereader either (just the In Death series) but I was so emotional listening to this, worried about the outcome, I may need to eventually relisten.

Guess what I went and did this weekend? Me and mine went and joined the local library. Yes, we found one hidden on the campus of a nearby High School. So who is going to try see if she can get audio books? ME!!! Okay, I might be listening to them in French. I’ll update you.
All that to say, I’ve added this one to check out, oh dear, like so many. But now I have my library card …

Thanks, Kimberly! I read the first book because I got it long ago as a kindle freebie. However, I switched to audio for both series and never looked back. I can’t imagine ever reading this series in any other format going forward.

Wow, this is a thriller recommendation and a half! I’ve just struggled through some slow books from my required reading list so have been looking to treat myself with something gripping. This series sounds like it ticks all the boxes! Thank you for the enthusiastic review 😊

The entire series is similar to this level but this one just nailed everything…it’s the culmination of everything that came before it.
Start with Grant County and you’ll want to binge read through both series.
