City of Heavenly Fire by Cassandra Clare

City of Heavenly Fire
The story resumes following the aftermath of Sebastian’s introduction of his Endarkened army and last attack. Jace is grappling with his heavenly fire, Alec is trying to come to terms with his breakup with Magnus, Simon and Isabelle are trying to defining their relationship, Luke and Jocelyn are planning their wedding and the search continues to find Sebastian.

Talk about epic endings! The series concludes in grand form with so much going on but I had no difficulty keeping up. This was a long, long story (over 20 hours) but there weren’t any dangling threads left untied. The flow of the events was well developed, paced and woven together for a cohesive story that had lots of drama, intrigue, subterfuge and riveting action. Some of it was predictable but presented in a way that still kept me drawn to the story. There were some surprises, especially the highly climatic ending. And, there was a nice connection to The Infernal Devices that I was hoping to see.

I’ve had my ups and downs with this series and am happy it ended so well, very much worth the hours invested. I took my time working through it as the story arc increased in complexity and was just so interesting, though I’m uncertain if I’ll continue with the next connected series (probably will succumb after a time). I’m glad I read it and especially that I opted to listen to the entire series, despite a couple of misses with narrators. The performances in this one hit the marks extremely well considering the massive cast and story volatilit. It landed just the way it should have.

    1. Thank you, Jules💜 This was selected as a group read in one of my Goodreads groups I moderate so I had to read the series. That said, I’m really happy I stuck with it as it grew on me and I ended up in a great place. FYI, the author recommended that we read the three prequels, The Infernal Devices after #3 and then return to TMI. We did that and it increased our enjoyment.

  1. Hi! I just came in the commented to say the book cover looks really cool. I really wish I could have gotten into this series. City of Bones felt flat for me and I just couldn’t finish City of Ashes. Nevertheless, her Infernal Devices series was amazing. It kept me hooked. I ended up watching Shadowhunter tv show. It was good, very disappointing ending tho.

      1. I just feel like the characters were really fleshed out and the different personalities of everyone. Plus I also enjoyed Clare’s writing. It is really cool to see how much the writing has changed from Bones to Clockwork. To see how much an author grows as a writer is really neat

        1. If you are interested in science-fiction/fantasy, I am starting to post chapters of a story I have written. It is about discovering life on a mysterious planet called Arcanum. How do people on earth respond? I have been very interested in what could potentially be out in space. Many talk about aliens and give what they think. Mine aren’t aliens. Mine are known as Diatons. Check it out: I have posted the first chapter. I will be posting every Friday and new chapter.
