Jeffrey Hardison comes home from work and hours later, his wife Sabine still hasn’t shown up. It’s soon determined that she’s missing. Meanwhile, a woman calling herself Beth Murphy, a fake identity, is on the run from her abusive husband and she’s leaving false trails to throw him off. As Marcus Durand, the detective assigned to the case, investigates Sabine’s disappearance, things start looking grim for Jeffrey as it looks like he had every reason to get rid of her.
When this story began, I thought I had its path figured out. Told from the points of view of Beth, Jeffrey and Marcus, it didn’t take long for me to realize I was rather clueless. It’s a puzzler where even when you can make certain assumptions, it’s still not enough to have things resolved. It kept me guessing almost to the end and, for that reason alone, I couldn’t let the story go.
I listened to the story and always appreciate when multiple performers are used when there are multiple narratives. All three did an excellent job and made a very good story even better. I read this with a group and we all still had questions when it was over. Those twists at the end made me go back and revisit certain parts and, yes, I missed the clues. This is my first book by the author and I’m liking her storytelling skills. This is more mystery and suspense than thrills, which was just fine by me.
