Morgan Grant is married and the mother of soon-to-be 17-year old daughter, Clara. One day after her own birthday, Morgan is suddenly thrust into chaos when her world is forever changed following a tragic accident involving her husband, Chris. While her relationship with her daughter was not bad, it wasn’t great and he was the one who helped mediate the rocky moments. Further complicating matters is Clara’s budding relationship with a boy Chris wasn’t happy about her getting involved with. Morgan has her own angst to manage while struggling to maintain some parental control over her daughter without sacrificing the bond that’s barely holding them together.
I’ve often seen the phrase, “all the feels” used in describing emotional stories and particularly those by this author. It never really resonated with me…until this one. I’ll not give you many details as they would definitely ruin your personal reading experience so here’s what mattered to me.
Morgan got handed situations she neither deserved or felt prepared for. Imagine dealing with grief, new responsibilities, emotional trauma coming from new situations while trying to find work after never having had a job and dealing with a teenager who wants to direct all that’s wrong in her world at you. I felt every pain, fear, anxiety and consternation that Morgan did. My emotions were all over the place, wondering how she was going to navigate the next ball being thrown at her. Would it be a direct hit or something she could drop without too much consequence? Handling it wasn’t always a good option.
I literally could not stop listening to this book. When I took a break to sleep, I woke at a ridiculous hour the next morning so I could get back to it. It’s a tale of two points of view as you get Clara’s, too. Because it’s from a teenager’s perspective, it has both young adult and contemporary adult fiction components and I’ve shelved this in both genres. I loved that two narrators were used and both did a fantastic job portraying Morgan and Clara, almost too good as they grabbed me by the throat from the start and tore up my insides. Obviously I loved everything about this one but don’t go into this thinking it will be all sweetness and light. It’s there but you’ve got to pay a steep price for it. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Thank you, Tina💜 Did you check out the sample? The narrator for Clara, Lauren Ezzo, really sounded like a bratty teenager (she was) and it felt so real. Tanya Eby made Morgan sound insecure, shaky about her judgment (she was). I loved the audio version as they brought these characters to life off the pages.

Thank you, Jennifer💜 Listen to the sample and judge for yourself. The two narrators became these characters and made them even more authentic.

Loved your review once more, Jonetta. 🙂 Glad to know the author succeeds in presenting both the POVs convincingly.

Thank you, Debjani💜 Yes, she nailed them both, even though the teenager’s brattiness was annoying but authentic. I was supposed to feel that way.

Thanks, Meggy💜 I’m such a fan, even if her intended audience is a bit younger. She nails her characters and makes them feel real. I’m late to her party and am still going through her backlist.
