I’ve always hated that question, “Where do you see yourself in five years?” Not Dannie Cohan. She’s known who and what she’s wanted to be and with whom since she was ten years old. Danni plans her life out to the minute and she’s happy that way. The people who care about her both personally and professionally do more than accept her for how she is…they admire her. She’s not that proverbial type A personality that rubs people the wrong way or has a hole in her soul or life. It works for her in all aspects.

When she goes out to dinner with her boyfriend one evening after nailing the most important interview of her career, Danni has even predicted he’s going to propose and you bet she’s prepared. However, after imbibing just a bit too much, she awakens in a strange apartment, with a strange man and a ring on her finger that’s not the one she accepted the night before. The television is on and it’s still December 15….but 2025, five years later. She proceeds to spend the weirdest hour of her life before she falls asleep again, only to awaken to the real present and her familiar life.

That’s all I’m willing to tell you about the details of this story because it was enough to lure me in and keep me engaged without a break. Yes, I listened to this story in one day because I literally couldn’t find a breakaway point. Danni isn’t a frivolous or head-in-the-sky kind of woman so this wasn’t a dreamy fantasy, at least not on the surface. What happens in the five years from the dream going forward was not anything I anticipated. It’s an emotional experience where I wasn’t sure of how I wanted it to go. One thing was certain was that I felt I eventually knew this woman, inside and out, as well as the other characters important to her life, and that had me completely connected to everything about her and the outcome.

This is not a predictable story, which adds to its allure. I listened to it (thank goodness!) and the narrator was outstanding. She was Danni, making her real and whole like you want to experience in an audio performance. There are strong romantic elements and mystery (not the scary kind) but at its heart it’s a tale of destiny and self exploration. One of the things I’ve believed about foretelling the future is things aren’t always as clear as you think they might seem. Keep that in mind as you read or listen, as I highly recommend. This one grabbed me and refused to let go.

  2. Oh how I hate that question too! Especially because thinking back in five-year sections, the future was never what I imagined it would be. But good for those who can answer it, or like to try to, at least 🙂

  18. I will have to see if I can find the audiobook for this one. Between the library and Scribd, I have been pretty lucky. It sounds really good, I have been enjoying some life dramas lately and this sounds like one I would enjoy. Fantastic review Jonetta.
