Detective Inspector Kim Stone and her team begin by taking down a child molester, in his own home. He’s the father of two who is beyond being suspected of sexually assaulting his 8-year old daughter. Next they’re called to the scene of the murder of a convicted rapist and unfortunately the primary suspect is his victim. However, something seems off about it to Kim and it eventually pits her against what will be her most formidable challenge. Dr. Alexandra (Alex) Thorne is a psychiatrist who may be playing much more than mind games.
I’ve read a lot of evil in my crime fiction but Alex North has made my top ten list. I’m not prepared to see Kim Stone be off balance, questioning her instincts but here she is doing just that. As the cases start piling up with patients tied to Alex, Kim just can’t shake off that gut instinct that we are all born with. However, it doesn’t help that she’s alone in her thinking.
This is the most aptly named story and I was mesmerized, not only because the story was downright intriguing but because I was worried for Kim. It went down twisty, mind scary paths, which all led to one exciting conclusion. It wasn’t all hard angles, though, as there is a nice and warm side story that just feels good. As if this wasn’t enough, there’s a big surprise at the end that was a jaw dropper. In retrospect, the clues were there but I’m not Kim Stone. I loved everything about this one, even my discomfort, made even more acute by the fantastic narrator. I’m beginning to understand the hype about this series and I will continue listening to the stories going forward.

I’m reading the series with others as a Goodreads group read and we are loving it! Highly recommend, Shalini💜

Wow… How do you manage to read/listen in a group read? I am amazed

I lead the book discussions. We read one book a month, in order. Then I post 12-15 questions for discussion in a group set up for these purposes. You have no idea how much fun it is to talk about a book like this with others who are reading it at the same time. I’ve got four of these going on right now.

Whoa… That’s amazing. Is this on Goodreads. I was a part of traveling sisters but it got to be so confusing that I left it. Since I blog from phone in fact, I only use the phone for everything, I didn’t understand this concept. Will check yours out. Can I have the link?

Here’s the link to the discussion group. You will get a better idea of the concept. We have normal book talk and challenges in other groups and only use this one to discuss the group reads.

Oh, I’ve read this one, I read the first two in this series, and enjoyed them. Though I bet it’s even better to listen to them and get creeped out with a great narrator setting the scene.

You are SO right, Alexandra💜 The narrator did a great job creeping me out. She made Alex sound so normal, which was important, but sinister at the same time. That took skill.

I so need to start doing audio, I feel like I’m missing out.

You know, when I was a little girl, my parents bought me two albums with children stories that I listened to over and over again (Greyfriars Bobby and Peter and the Wolf). I’ve loved being read to ever since.

This must be one of the few cases, where I’ve read a book before you! I am so glad you enjoyed it, I find it’s a great series. As far as I remember I only made it to book 4 (I don’t quite have your persistence and systematic approach when it comes to series) but I mean to get back to it at some point. Great review, Jonetta!

Thank you, Stargazer💜 I’ve wanted to start this series for a long time and know I’m late to the game😏 It was selected as a series group read in one of my Goodreads groups so that’s why I’m able to read one a month. Left to my own devices? Not so sure.

Excellent review of what seems like an excellent psychological thriller, Jonetta. 🙂 So many books to read, so little time! Thanks for sharing.

Wonderful review Jonetta. I also enjoyed this one, but need to continue with this series. I did not know they were available on audiobook, but will have to listen to a couple to see what I think.
