This story is directly tied to the one preceding it, Dying Truth, and I highly recommend for those who read out of order to read that one first.
After the devastation of the last case where Kim was seriously injured and her team fractured, she returns to work after a six-week absence, bringing them back together for the first time. The weight of what happened hangs heavily over all of them but Kim quickly gets them in action on their new case. When she and Bryant arrive at the crime scene, they discover the victim is Dr. Gordon Cordell, the gynecologist who was tied to their last investigation involving Heathcrest Academy and the secret society. Meanwhile, Stacey independently decides to continue her probe into the disappearance of a 15-year old girl, Jessie Ryan, who her last division had virtually decided to ignore.
The cases consumed the team but always in the background was the loss they failed to confront but couldn’t be ignored. That failure showed up in several different ways, most notably a serious friction between Kim and Bryant. They appeared to agree on so very little involving the case, which impaired their ability to gain clarity about the suspects. Austin Penn from West Mercia was also assigned to help out the team and Stacey’s resentment was palpable, turning her into someone we hadn’t seen before even while her side investigation gained traction.
Marsons again showed her incredible skill at digging deep into the psyches of her characters in an extraordinary manner while maintaining the mystery and suspense of the cases they’re investigating. Both were challenging with unexpected, twisty outcomes and I was completely engaged from beginning to end. The exciting climaxes also brought the team back together in a way that brought healing and a new path forward. This was an outstanding story that narrator Jan Cramer again elevated skillfully, delivering another great performance.

Fantastic review Jo. Although I am reading these in order, thanks for that warning. I am ready to start Dying Truth, but will be reading this one instead of listening. So glad this is still a series that is going strong.
