Perdita (Perdie) Stone is a senior associate at a major Charleston law firm. She’s in North Dakota deposing a company CEO her firm is suing on behalf of a client and she’s up against hotshot Ivy League attorney Carter Leplan. Perdie outfoxes him, forcing them into a major settlement. After she agrees to share a ride to the airport with Carter, they find themselves snowed in and forced to also share the one available hotel room. Things get out of hand but Perdie decides not to worry since he’s west coast and she’s not. Thinking the meeting her boss sets up with her upon her return is to congratulate her and announce she’s being made a partner, Perdie is completely unprepared to find Carter in the meeting being introduced as the firm’s new partner.
Having seen this scenario played out so many times in real life, I thought I knew the probable path this story would take but spiced a bit because of what happened between Carter and Perdie in North Dakota. Unfortunately, nothing about Perdie was recognizable, at least for me, as everything she did felt improbable, immature and unprofessional.
This is definitely one of those situations where it’s me not being the right audience for this story. As someone who worked hard to rise above gender discrimination in male dominated fields, my own experience didn’t come close to Perdie’s behavior, or anyone else’s in my world (including lots of lawyers). I couldn’t get beyond the sexual interludes in the office, at company events and other extremely risky locales, along with excessive drinking and pot smoking. Not judging…they just didn’t fit (did I forget to mention that Perdie is 39 years old?). I never bonded with or respected her, even when she earned my sympathy. There are good bones to the story and it could have been something special, which is why I rounded up. It just wasn’t for me since there are quite a few positive reviews from an audience that seems more befitting. I’d check those out before you decide.

Hmm doesn’t sound very good to me either Jo, definitely a case of suspending belief whilst reading! Fab review btw.

Thanks, Nicki💜 I didn’t have enough imagination to suspend belief with this one😏

Sorry to hear this one didn’t work out for you. I think I would struggle with this as well if I wasn’t able to respect the main character. Hope your next read is a better one for you. 🙂

Thanks, Suzanne💜 I think we’re over the intended age group on this one.

This does sound like a book I would have issue with too. I can’t get behind unprofessional and immature not to mention I’d have issue with extracurricular choices just in the way of how many bad decisions can be made. Insightful review, Jo!

I didn’t know you dealt with lawyers (too)! I hate excessive drinking and drugs irl (I have heard that it’s quite common among lawyers though) so I don’t know if I’d enjoy this either, but I did enjoy your review!

Thank you, Inge💜 I once had a job where I was joined at the hip with corporate counsel…for 10 years! None of them came even close to the behaviors in this story.

I learned the hard way to steer clear of many books geared to the 20 to 30 YO market. I just can’t enjoy some of those antics. Sorry this didn’t work for you, Jo.

Thanks, Carla. I thought I was safe with a 39-year old character! This one behaved like a college student.
