Louisiana Bureau of Investigations Agent Cage Foster runs into much more than he’d calculated during a sting operation targeting a major drug dealer. Forced to run to a nearby cemetery, he barely escapes with his life and only because he encountered a trio who had just discovered a dead body. Investigating that case leads him down paths that are unique to the New Orleans culture and place him in some of the most dangerous situations of his life.
Cage is still viewed as an outsider by the police department he’s there to assist but Detective Myra Bonin is all in as his partner despite his lack of patience for city “protocols” when it comes to dealing with the elites of New Orleans. As this takes place around the time preceding Fat Tuesday, every aspect of the myths, mysticism and voodoo religion associated with the Big Easy are in play. Some of it was fascinating but all of it was an annoyance to Cage until he abruptly had to face his cynicism, challenging his belief system.
The case was extraordinarily complicated, rooted in generations of several families shrouded in murky pasts, determined to protect their secrets. It felt convoluted at times as I was struggling to keep up but the mystery was compelling. I loved Cage’s relationships with Annabeth George and Lyric Gaudet, both so damaged by their pasts that their filters were long gone. But both are devoted to Cage for different reasons and nonetheless are crucial to his survival. I changed suspects so many times I finally gave up and just went with the story. While the first half took its time as the foundation for the story was created, the second half was truly exciting. There are things that happened that scared me silly. I love this character and am still getting used to his change of venue. However, I’m seeing Cage be stretched and tested, professionally and personally, which I find exciting.

I love the sound of this one, because I love stories set in and around New Orleans and that culture. Definitely has all the right ingredients, and despite you saying it got a little complicated, I think I might nonetheless enjoy this one. Thanks for the review. 😀

Oooo, I love the cover, such a gorgeous Mardi Gras mask. I enjoy complicated mysteries, but I need to be in the mood to read them. I don’t always want to think when I read, if that makes sense. The relationships between the characters sounds wonderful. Great review Jonetta.
