the setup…
Josie Fair is a mother of two, married to Walter, and it’s her 45th birthday. She’s decided to do something different and have her husband take her to a gastropub to celebrate. While there, another party arrives with a woman who is also not only celebrating her birthday but it’s also her 45th. Josie follows her to the ladies room, strikes up a conversation about them being birthday twins and learns the woman is Alix Summers, a popular journalist and podcaster. In that moment, Josie decides this is the time for her big life change and begins to orchestrate a relationship with Alix and become the subject of her next podcast series. Oh, dear.
the heart of the story…
Alix becomes intrigued by Josie after she begins to share her history. The journalist in her makes her ignore those instincts that tell her to move with caution. Alix is married with two children and her husband Nathan isn’t a fan of Josie. He and the children sense something off about her but it could be just the darkness of her past. Even though I found Josie a bit creepy, I was still willing to give her the benefit of the doubt…until she wormed her way into Alix’s home for an extended stay. Hmmm…
the narration…
I love a full cast narration and this one was superb. The points of view come primarily from Josie and Alix for the most part (Walker and Brealey were perfection) but there are segments of a podcast about the “birthday twins” presented in the future, complete with sound effects. If you like audiobooks, you’ll love this performance.
the bottom line…
Yes, you’ll have to deal with potentially unreliable narrators here, specifically all things related to Josie as you have to determine how much of her past she shares in the podcast is true or not. She’s an enigma and everything about her is murky. Alix is no fool but her journalistic desires have her pushing aside her better instincts, allowing Josie more latitude than others normally would. You’ll be just as intrigued to find out fact versus fiction and what was going on in that Fair house. I woke up in the middle of the night to finish listening because I just had to know. And, I want a sequel Ms. Jewell!!!

Excellent review, Jo. I love Lisa Jewell’s books and have been waiting patiently to get the audiobook, and it sounds like it will be worth the wait. If she does a sequel, I hope it is not a long wait between them.

yes the ending was too open for me. I enjoyed listening until that point and realizing there were things I still wanted to know. I’m never big on unreliable narrators either.

I love unreliable characters so much. Even when sometimes it seems rather obvious, it isn’t and I will always give bonus points to authors who keep me guessing.
