Streaming Sunday – The Flatshare

Streaming Sunday features TV series or movies adapted from books I’ve read, offered on at least one streaming service and I’ve watched.

The Flatshare is a British comedy drama based on the book of the same name by Beth O’Leary. The 6-episode series was developed by 42 for Paramount+ and premiered in the UK, Australia and Canada on December 1, 2022. It stars Jessica Brown Findlay as Tiffany (Tiffy) Moore and Anthony Welsh as Leon Twomey.  It began streaming on Amazon Prime Video’s FreeVee August 3, unfortunately one of the best kept secrets!

The series stays amazingly true to the book with an interesting and diverse cast. I thought the casting for Tiffy and Leon rather perfect as they lived up to the images I’d created in my own head. The supporting cast was more of a mix but all delivered believable and great performances.

I loved, loved, loved the book and am thrilled that the series adaptation surpassed by expectations! I think it was a mistake for Paramount+ to have underestimated the US audience potential interest and the decision to not launch it simultaneously with the UK, Australia and Canada one. To make matters worse, the US release wasn’t marketed robustly as I stumbled across it while browsing Amazon Prime Video. When I found it, I binged through the episodes over two days.

What was most unique and fun about the book was Leon and Tiffy don’t initially meet when she answers his ad for a flatshare. He has it from 8:00 am – 8:00 pm, she has it the hours in between and on the weekends. Their method of communication with each other is via post-it notes, an extremely captivating aspect in the book that was equally charming on screen. That’s the part I thought would be lost in translation!

Bottom line…those who loved the book will be overjoyed at the adaptation to screen. The Rotten Tomatoes score is 100% and it earned it. Hurry now and launch that FreeVee ap (with ads) and watch this delightful series

  1. I still am wanting to read Beth O’Leary and I just don’t get to tv shows. My daughter made me aware of freevee as she uses it. Maybe we can get to this if I can get her interested.

  2. This is the one Beth O’Leary book I haven’t read yet. I will have to see if I can find this series when I get home from vacation. It sounds wonderful, Jo, but first to read the book.
