Count My Lies by Sophie Stava @sophiejstava @andreweiden @devonsorvaribrand @devonsorvaribrand.bsky.social @tremaineiac @simon.audio @simonaudio.bsky.social #CountMyLies

the setup…
Sloane Caraway is a nail technician living in Brooklyn with her mother. That’s her truth but most of what she shares about herself is a lie. She’s been doing it all her life, mostly to just make herself more interesting to people. During one of her lunch breaks in the park, she comes to the aid of Jay Lockhart and his four-year old daughter Harper who just suffered a bee sting. She declares she’s a nurse named Caitlin and removes the stinger. She’s seen them before and is attracted to Jay. He’s married and she later meets his wife Violet and soon has wrangled herself a job as Harper’s nanny.

the heart of the story…
Sloane’s really not a bad person, just a lonely woman who just wants to have friends in her life. When she meets Violet, the two women form a fast friendship that only strengthens when Sloane becomes a fixture in their home. The lies continue and I was just waiting for when it would all fall apart for Sloane and her past rises up. When she agrees to accompany them to Block Island for a summer vacation, things take a dramatic turn I didn’t see coming.

the narration…
I’m so glad that three narrators were used for Sloane, Violet and Jay’s points of view. Devon Sorvari, Emily Tremaine and Andrew Eiden wore their characters so well and were wonderful storytellers.

the bottom line…
You know at some point that lies will catch up with you but I was unprepared for the “how” when it happened here. That nice twisty turn had me riveted through the end as Sloane wasn’t the only one racking up the lies. I just sat back and counted, following along through to the unknown, hooked to the last word (or lie?).
