the setup…
Elizabeth Davis is an English professor at New York’s Pace University. One of her classes is a yearlong fiction writing seminar. When one of her students submits her first chapter for review, Elizabeth is stunned to find the details are identical to something that happened to her friend Jocelyn when she was seventeen. It involves a sexually abusive affair with an older teacher who ends up dead…and she knows who killed him. Who is this student and how does she know???
the heart of the story…
To say that submitted writing assignment unnerved Elizabeth is an understatement. It’s sends her into a tailspin, back to her Louisiana hometown where it all happened. There were only three people who knew what happened, including herself, but Jocelyn seems to have disappeared and the student was equally elusive. Elizabeth is a complicated woman with an active sexual life but avoids relationships beyond anything casual despite suitors wanting more. It was clear she’d experienced some kind of trauma in her past, made especially clear when she returned home.
the narration…
Leslie Howard carries most of the story and she was wonderful as the confident but angsty Elizabeth. I loved her voice tone. Aiden Snow was a lovely surprise as well. They were excellent storytellers.
the bottom line…
I expected there’d be a few twists but this journey was more squiggly than I was prepared for, especially the one that turned the story on its head at about the halfway mark. It made me sit up straight and reevaluate everything. Nothing is what it seemed and everything is called into question. And that ending…had to rewind and listen several times to make certain I heard it right. My first and certainly not my last by this author.

Great review, Jo. I am also a fan of twists that I don’t see coming, but that fit when you reexamine everything.
