The Drowning Girls by Lisa Regan @lisareganauthor @lisaregan.bsky.social @katehandford @hachetteuk @bookouture @bookouture.bsky.social #DetectiveJosieQuinn #TheDrowningGirls

the setup…
Detective Josie Quinn is spending quality time with her family and friends when her colleague, Detective Finn Mettner, shows up asking for her help. He fears Amber Watts, their press liaison and his girlfriend, is missing and Finn only wants Josie’s help for now. After checking out Amber’s house, it’s clear she’s not there though all of her belongings are. Josie finds a cryptic message on her car’s windshield that leads them to Russell Haven dam. When they arrive they see a red-haired woman lying between boulders, clearly in distress but alive and about to be washed away by released water from the dam. Is it Amber?

the heart of the story…
Amber is missing, Finn’s out of control and Josie is struggling to find out anything about the woman who hasn’t had contact with her family for ten years. It’s baffling but the team is dogged in their pursuit of answers, strangely connected by the Russell Haven dam. The procedurals are outstanding.

the narration…
Kate Handford had her hands full with a host of unusual characters and she provided distinctions for all. Loved her storytelling, especially around the harrowing scenes.

the bottom line…
I went into this blind and am thankful I did as there were so many twists and revelations. Amber is an enigma and peeling back all those layers of her past brought one surprise after another. It’s another story where I was just as much in the dark as the team but did guess one of the major twists. This was beyond gnarly.
