the setup…
Teen Amber Chambers was in a park collecting cans for money when she stumbles upon a dead body. Deschutes County Detective Noelle Marshall is assigned the case and is stymied trying to identify the man. Meanwhile, FBI Agent Max Rhodes and his Bend office are exploring recent chatter about a potential violent uprising. His case intersects Noelle’s when they discover a dead body killed in a similar manner and the ballistics match. Things later take terrifying turns as they determine the threat is real race against time to uncover the players and the targets.
the heart of the story…
It was wonderful to see the characters from the Mercy Kilpatrick series crossover. They seamlessly fit into Noelle’s world and her relationship with Max has moved to a deeper level. But it’s the menacing threat stemming from a disgruntled group of men off the grid and some newcomers that keep things tense. And, Amber seems to be hiding something…and in danger.
the narration…
Stephanie Németh-Parker is another favorite who does extremely well with male voices and makes you think there are multiple performers. Thrilled she’s the voice of this series as her storytelling skills are great.
the bottom line…
After the last story, I was hoping to see Noelle rebound and she has, most of the secrets of her past revealed to friends and colleagues. Cohesive interface between the law enforcement groups was paramount and made the difference, even though the threats were opaque and elusive. Their procedurals kept me mesmerized. I loved being back in this world.
