the setup…
Camille Bayliss is married to Ben, a top criminal defense lawyer in Baton Rouge. Theirs is a picture perfect marriage to the outside world, except it isn’t for Camille. Looking for a way out, she sets up a plan where she can sneak back into the house and uncover the secrets she knows he’s hiding and maybe get some leverage for a divorce. She arranges to have Aubrey Price pretend to be her, carrying her phone and driving her car in another city while Ben is out of town and Camille hides in the house. But Ben turns up dead! Best laid plans.

the heart of the story…
Nothing in this story is what it at first seems. There is definitely a host of secrets that a whole lot of people are keeping and trying to protect. The timeline shifts back and forth from a point in the past that shapes the lives of everyone involved and to the present. I was able to keep up despite all the twisty turns and revelations. But, I didn’t see the big one coming.

the narration…
MacLeod Andrews (Hank), Saskia Maarleveld (Camille), Amanda Stribling (Aubrey) & Dan Bittner (Ben) delivered outstanding performances in characterizations and storytelling. They were seamless in their pacing. So good!

the bottom line…
I loved Elston’s debut novel and this was just as tangled a web of lies and secrets as that one. Both Camille and Aubrey had private agendas that ended up complicating matters even more. It was fascinating and I couldn’t wait to see where it would land. I was prepared for a surprise but when it came, I was still caught flat footed. This most definitely lived up to my high expectations.
