the setup…
Tess DeWater and Allie Merritt are best friends, almost like sisters but live very different lives. Tess is working and in law school; Allie is an extremely successful travel influencer with a dare devil spirit who finally convinces her risk-averse friend to go caving with her. As they go deeper in that cave, it soon becomes clear they are not alone. The man Allie insulted on their way in is out for retaliation and it becomes a desperate fight for Tess to stay alive.
the heart of the story…
The story begins with Tess in a hospital bed, sharing the details of her harrowing experience with a detective. It shifts back and forth from that setting to the real time events in that cave. Even though clearly Tess has survived, it’s a breathtaking journey to figure out everything in between. My biggest fear is being enclosed in tight spaces and I felt like I was in that cave struggling with anxiety. It felt real.
the narration…
Sophie Amoss has got some serious storytelling skills! She put me in that cave (shudder) and gave distinctive voices for everyone involved. It’s an outstanding performance.
the bottom line…
This is as twisty as that cave, so atmospheric I felt discomfort, struggling to breathe and move. More so than that, it’s crafty not only in structure but in characterizations. Just when I thought I had things worked out, a wrench would be tossed in to challenge that latest theory. Hold on tight because nothing is settled until the last page. Loved it!
