the setup…
Benny Abbott and Joy Moore met at a party thirteen years ago when she first moved to Los Angeles and they’ve been best friends since. They now host one of the most popular and recognized podcasts worldwide, This Story Might Save Your Life. Every week they pose a survival situation and hypothesize their way out. Joy is married to Xander and also suffers from severe narcolepsy. He makes it his life mission to take care of her, especially when she’s plagued by a stalker. Then Benny shows up to record that morning’s podcast and discovers both Joy and Xander have vanished and signs that something terrible happened. As the police investigate, Benny soon appears to be their prime suspect.
the heart of the story…
Benny and Joy’s friendship is remarkable, almost too much so, as the question of why they didn’t choose each other as marriage partners always looms. It begins with the present day podcast and you quickly get their easy and natural rhythm. The story transitions from past to present, switching between Benny’s and Joy’s points of view. The podcast presentations were simply outstanding.
the narration…
Julia Whelan and Sean Patrick Hopkins are responsible for creating that wonderfully natural rhythm between Benny and Joy. They made this story lively and fascinating. Just perfection.
the bottom line…
This was so well crafted as even though the clues were all there, for the life of me, I couldn’t settle on a theory or suspects. There are plenty of them and that created the intrigue. But it was Benny and Joy who make it all work…their relationship, their podcast and the people who care about them. This was a win.
