I was tagged by my friend Inge | The Belgian Reviewer and am happy she did! How perfect for Halloween. If you haven’t checked out her blog, please do as it’s pretty special.
Thrillers or Supernaturals?
While I like the paranormal, thrillers are my default lane. I literally cannot resist them. Serial killers frighten me more than those from the beyond.
Ghosts or Zombies?
I don’t get the current obsession with zombies🧟♂️. Nothing about them draws me in. Give me a good spirit 👻 anytime, in any form, at any location.
Vampires or Werewolves?
Just might be a tie here, maybe an edge towards the vamps as the BDB brothers and the men of Midnight Breed are my book boyfriends.
Witches or Demons?
Witches🧙🏽♀️. Hands down. I have no desire to mess with any aspect of the underworld😈, fiction or reality!!
Would you rather read a book with 13 chapters or a book with a black cat on the cover?
Definitely 13 chapters as I’m not superstitious about that number…most of the time. Black cats spook me out!
Would you rather read a spooky book in the dark with only a candle for light or by yourself in a locked, brightly lit room?
Doesn’t everyone lock their bedroom doors when reading alone at night?
Would you rather face your worst fears or be trapped in the mind of a killer?
My worst fear is to be trapped underground in a coffin-like area with limited space to move. No, give me the killer’s brain. I’ll manage.
Would you rather watch a scary movie or read a scary book?
I read scary books almost weekly. Scary movies…not so much. I’m a screamer and it doesn’t go over well in the theater or with my hubby.
Would you rather read spooky books during the fall time or all year?
All year long. Every season works for me.
Would you rather read 10 spooky books in October or 10 spooky books all year?
Give me all year. I’m not sure I’d want to stuff them all into one month.
Here’s my list of 10 spooky books I’ve read over the years
- Ice Cold by Tess Gerritsen
- Silent Scream by Angela Marsons
- The Lies We Bury by Stacy Green
- The Restorer by Amanda Stevens
- Rebecca by Daphne Du Maurier
- The Drowned Girls by Loreth Anne White
- Huntress Moon by Alexandra Sokoloff
- Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
- Into the Light by Aleatha Romig
- Bird Box by Josh Malerman
Holy camogie- I have the same fear! I totally blame a film I saw when I was far too young. It was called the Longest Night and it was about a girl who was kidnapped and held underground in a coffin while being ransomed. Freaked me good and proper!!
I’m a screamer too. Largely because I find it hilarious 😂

Mine developed from a CSI TV episode. It was just awful. I had nightmares.
We screamers have to support each other😏 But, I’m truly frightened…doesn’t take much because my imagination just runs amok.

“Serial killers frighten me more than those from the beyond.” Exactly this! Or just murder in general, really, that’s enough. True crime is so much scarier to me than anything ghosty or supernatural! And Rebecca is by far one of the spookiest books I’ve ever read too.

I admire how you can read so much true crime because I find it chilling. I have to read them in small doses (or else I’ll obsess!) and love living vicariously through your reviews😏 The fictional serial killers get to stay in the clouds.
Rebecca is so, so creepy, even the movie.

I have to put the brakes on it sometimes! There are some stories that really get to me and I need a big step away. For some reason it helps me though, like knowing how things happened and more things to be aware of, somehow, I guess?
The movie Rebecca is so amazing too, such a favorite! I have a print of the movie poster framed in my bedroom. Such a classic 🙂

Thank you so much Jonetta! It was great to read your answers… I didn’t know a black cat freaked you out though, they don’t seem to be able to much evil to me, but then I have a nice cat ;-). I have Into the Light to read, I didn’t know it was such a spooky novel.. I’ll be careful if and when I pick it up now 🙂

You’re welcome! My mother created the black cat fear in both me and my sister as children and it stuck. Into the Light is creepy. I’m interested in what you think.

Fantastic idea for a post! I don’t read my spooky reads, but these sound like interesting ones that you’ve listed at the end, brilliant 🙂

Thank you! I thought it a great idea, too, and wish I’d thought of it. The books on this list are probably more creepy or sinister than spooky (a couple of exceptions).

Aww, poor black kitties and their bad rep! 😀 My neighbour has one, and he’s like 17 years old and half bald, but still kinda scary. Hehe. But cute too.
I’m reading Dark Matter now. Goes well with the sci-fi november as well, but also scary all right 😀
Bird Box was pretty good too! Finished it yesterday.

Yeah, my Mom created the black cat fear and early! That bald cat would still unnerve me😬
I really liked Dark Matter, found it more intriguing than spooky but it was creepy. Bird Box didn’t scare me but I think the movie will. Again, a very creepy book!

I LOVED The Light duality by Aleatha Roming. That series was creepy as hell. I love scary books all year, though I do pick up more in September and October. I love scary movies too. My issue that there are so many bad horror movies, it is hard to find the good ones. I think I would pick shifters over vamps (though it would be a close thing) demons over witches (again, a close thing), zombies over spirits and the killers’s mind (I just find that fascinating and love reading stories that have the killer’s POV). Fun post.

Thanks, Melanie! I loved that duality series by Romig, too. It was definitely strange and I wasn’t expecting it to be. I following a blog called Movie Babbles ( here’s the link: https://moviebabblereviews.com ) and they had a recent post dealing with the good and bad of horror movies. One of these days you’re gonna have to explain the appeal of zombies😳
