The Swap
Low Morrison is that teenager…the one who doesn’t quite fit in anywhere. She’s 6’ tall with Nordic looks, living on a small island in the Pacific Northwest with an unconventional family and name. It’s no surprise that she’d easily become awed by Freya Light, a married newcomer who’s married to Max, a former hockey star, and is a famous social media influencer. Low signs up for Freya’s pottery class and is sucked in by this enchanting woman who not only pays attention to her but wants her friendship. But, when Freya visits Jamie Vincent’s store and they become fast friends, Low feels her relationship threatened, which disrupts her newfound confidence. Then Jamie’s life is upended when she and her husband spend a drug-enhanced evening with Freya & Max and waken with the wrong partners.

Honestly, I wasn’t far into the story before I saw the inevitable train wreck coming, not because of any one event but because I’ve seen someone like Freya before. She’s charmingly shallow and manipulative, attracting wounded souls like Low and Jamie who lack the skills to see the danger signs. But, Freya’s pretty good, though and her timing is just about perfect…knowing when to push and pull. Just like with any disaster you see coming, I was powerless to look away and wanted to reach inside the story and bring them to safety.

This took just a little time to become hard to put down, a slightly slow burn in the beginning and once it took hold, I kept delaying my stopping point (you know, just one more chapter). I loved that there were multiple narrators used for the four points of view represented. All delivered wonderful performances, capturing the voices of their respective characters. As much as I thought I knew the ending, it took an unexpected turn that was in no way predictable. A perfect example of why this author is an auto read for me. I’m going back and listening to that ending again.
