Best of 2021 – Top 12 Series

If you’re a regular follower, you know by now I LOVE series reading! This year, I participated in many series group reads on Goodreads. It’s been a wonderful year for my series reading as so many were absolute wins. Here’s my list of those I started, continued or finished in 2021 (in no particular order).

1. DI Kim Stone by Angela Marsons

My love for this series is hard to describe and now that I’m caught up, I miss not following Kim and her team every month. If you love mysteries and police procedurals, this should be on your shelf. And, the audio version is a must!

2.
In Death by J. D. Robb

This series will always have a special place in my heart. There are 53 books and counting, still fresh and has me reading every new release as soon as I can get my hands on the eBook. It has everything…strong main and secondary character development, top notch police procedurals and a great romance.

3.
The Perfect Gentlemen  by Shayla Black & Lexi Blake

I was unprepared to like this series, let alone love it. Even though the romance storylines concluded with each book, there was a continuing mystery & suspense story arc through to the end that kept our group guessing. It was my surprise guilty pleasure.

4.
Morgan Dane by Melinda Leigh

Another group read, this series featured some gnarly mysteries, perilous investigations and a bit of romance. We looked forward to each book every month and all were wins.

5.
Lucy Kincaid  by Allison Brennan

Another group read, this series gets better with every book. We’ve followed Lucy from her teens and experienced her development into a skilled FBI agent. It’s all mystery, suspense and thriller with a whiff of romance. I love it when characters continue and grow in a series.

6.
Max Revere by Allison Brennan

We paused Lucy Kincaid to begin this connected series, intersecting with this 4th book, which surpassed our expectations. And, we were pleasantly surprised to be thrilled with the entire series and the main character.

7.
Bishop Security by Debbie Baldwin

This series is one of my great surprises, written by an Indie author who participated in one of my Goodreads groups where we took a chance on her first book. Now? Three books in and she can’t write them fast enough for us.

8.
Carter Island  by Cate Beauman

Another Indie author whose stories hook me every time. This series had one of the best romances and connected families that I’ve enjoyed in a long time. I hated to see it end but it was wonderful while it lasted.

9.
Fatal  by Marie Force

This one is like catnip for me and I hated that it was ending. But, it was a wonderful surprise to learn that it continues with a spinoff. It’s another one with strong secondary characters, police procedurals and complicated mysteries. Even better on audio!

10.
Cork O’Connor by William Kent Krueger

Krueger weaves literary magic with this series and I hope he never finds an end for it and the characters I’ve come to love. Chock full of historical significance and rich tales of the indigenous people of Minnesota, I’m educated as much as I’m entertained.

11.
Colorado High Country by Pamela Clare

This series has evolved to include characters from her beloved I-Team series, adding even more intrigue and a strong sense of community. It has just about everything, including a beautiful setting where residents live harmoniously with nature and respect the indigenous cultures.

12.
Thursday Murder Club by Richard Osman

One book in and I am hopelessly hooked! I’m waiting for the release of the third book before I begin the second. These senior sleuths just swept me up  in their investigation, which was less interesting than they are!

What were some of your favorite series in 2021?

  1. Yes, I love all Allison Brennan books. When I can get them. They are almost never published in the UK in e format, plus some not even in paperback. It makes me grind my teeth! A Big fave is The Badari Warriors series by Veronica Scott, and Sara Paretsky’s VI Warshawski

  2. I found the Cate Beauman series on Scribd and will be reading/listening to it and am still working my way through DI Kim Stone. I love Kate Burkholder by Linda Castillo and am hoping to catch up with M.J. Arlidge’s Helen Grace series. Of course I love so many cozy mystery series as well as romance by Susan Mallery, RaeAnne Thayne and Lee Tobin McLain.

    1. Oh, I hope you enjoy Beauman, Carla💜💜💜 I’m enjoying Kate Burkholder, too, despite my issues with the endings. I have got to read RaeAnne Thayne one of these days. Oh! I’ve collected three of the books in the McLain series you recently recommended.
