the setup…
It begins with a baseball game. The DC Federals are playing the final game of the season, one out away from advancing to the World Series. Then Willie Vasquez, the star center fielder, inexplicably drops an easy fly ball. Game and season over. Sam, Nick, Scotty and lots of their friends are there (thankfully) because the city goes crazy and not in a good way. Before the morning, Willie is found dead with a whole town full of suspects.

the heart of the story…
The murder case is center stage but there’s a lot of other things going on in the lives of Sam, her family and her team members. It’s one of the things I’m enjoying about this series, especially how seamlessly it’s woven together into one compelling story. Willie’s murder case took a turn down a dark path, too, one I didn’t see coming.

the narration…
Still loving Kaminsky’s performance! Good story made even better with her skilled delivery.

the bottom line…
Nick’s re-election, Scotty’s immersion into the family, Gonzo’s custody issues and Sam’s sister Tracy’s escalating problems with her daughter were just a few of the personal elements surrounding the central case. I enjoyed most everything except the strange tangent in Sam & Nick’s sexy times, which just feels off. Otherwise, this was a really good listening experience, including the storyline involving Lieutenant Stahl. Yeah, that’s my teaser.
