the setup…
Five years ago, Lucy Chase was found wandering down a road in a wooded area, injured and covered in blood. It was later discovered that most of the blood belonged to her best friend Savannah (Savvy) Harper who was found dead in those woods. Suspicion quickly turned to Lucy by just about everyone in the small Texas town but she had no memory of that night and was never charged. She escaped to Los Angeles and created a new life for herself but now it’s all being dredged up again by Ben Owens, the host of the hugely popular true crime podcast “Listen for the Lie.” Savvy’s murder is the focus of his second season.
the heart of the story…
Lucy is the narrator of this story but segments of the podcast are interspersed quite brilliantly at pivotal moments. I was concerned that it would either overpower Lucy’s story or underwhelm the podcast feature but that didn’t happened. I loved both as she is witty, snarky, pragmatic and pretty funny. She returns to Plumpton for a visit at her grandmother Beverly’s request and is forced to deal with Ben and the rest of the town as he investigates the case. He’s really good at what he does, even if he’s not always ethical in his approach.
the narration…
LaVoy is one of my top five favorite narrators and her performance here illustrates why she’s earned that spot. I had to remind myself there weren’t more female narrators. Damron is no slouch either and he was outstanding in his portrayal of Ben and delivery of the podcast.
the bottom line.…
Yes, this does live up to the hype as I was concerned about that aspect. Lucy was a surprise as I wasn’t expecting her wicked sense of humor and forthrightness. She really had no memory of that night and the journey back to that time, led by Ben’s investigation and interviews, was just as illuminating to her as it was to me. The ending was so fitting for what preceded the revelation as it was just one of several theories I’d concocted. This book is best served up on audio because LaVoy and Damron make an excellent story feel real. Just listen for the lies.
