Atmosphere by Taylor Jenkins Reid @tjenkinsreid @justjuliawhelan @kdimerc @kdimerc.bsky.social @prhaudio @prhaudio.bsky.social #Atmosphere

the setup…
It’s 1980 and Joan Goodwin is a Rice University professor of physics and astronomy. She’s always dreamed of being in the midst of the stars and when she learns that NASA is opening up to accept women scientists into the Space Shuttle Program, she throws her hat into the ring and is accepted. Joan trains along with the best in the country. Her fellow candidates include three other women, Vanessa Ford, Lydia Danes and Donna Fitzgerald, along with two pilots, Hank Redmond and John (Griff) Griffin. Joan will form a lasting bond with these women and men as they go through the rigorous training to prepare for flight. But in 1984, everything changes in a moment.

the heart of the story…
I go into most books blind but especially those by this author. It starts with a catastrophic event and then suddenly steps back in time to give Joan more depth, color and dimension. Her relationship with her niece Frances especially plays a pivotal role in her decision making, personally and professionally. The time shifts were seamlessly and expertly woven and I was mesmerized, urgently anticipating whatever came next. I’m unwilling to reveal much more.

the narration
I expected an exceptional performance from Julia Whelan and got an additional bonus with new-to-me Kristen DiMercurio. Both are master storytellers and managed their characters and others skillfully.

the bottom line…
This is a richly layered character and plot driven story that juxtaposed me back in time when things were more challenging for women and those choosing same sex relationships. I experienced sadness about those times and a bit of trepidation as we face similar threats again in the present. I fell in love with the characters, strengths and flaws and all in between. The last chapters took my breath away and I’ll never forget this story.

      1. She wouldn’t have minded the LGBTQ content so maybe it was the US based content. I haven’t had a chance to ask her yet but she only gave it 3 stars on Goodreads which is low for her.

  1. I’m glad you enjoyed this one, Jo. Wonderful review. I’m with Anne, I had trouble getting into Daisy Jones and the Six and haven’t tried her since. Maybe it is time.
