the setup…
Detective Josie Quinn stops by Denton University to see her brother and together they find a young girl fully clothed floating face down in the campus pool. Despite Josie’s efforts to save her, champion swimmer Nysa Somers couldn’t be revived. Her death is inexplicable and the team is baffled until her backpack is located and Josie finds something that leads them down a strange path. After a retired firefighter almost loses his life and that of his two granddaughters in a house fire he supposedly set, Josie is convinced the two events are connected and a pattern is forming.
the heart of the story…
As more people are inexplicably behaving in ways that put them at serious risk, Josie and the team are sure that someone is behind this and they need to find the connections and the how. This wasn’t easy and it’s a real head scratcher. The paths are murky and whoever is behind this diabolical plan is just as evil.
the narration…
Kate Handford was excellent in her storytelling and had a range of voices this time requiring distinction. She delivered another great performance.
the bottom line…
This was one of the most puzzling cases to date with an elusive killer whose motives seemed petty and targets felt random. I was just as lost as the team, even with the killer’s added points of view. It was chilling and exciting, especially when it hit close to home. The personal issues were equally engaging and I can’t wait to see what’s next for Josie.

OK I can’t read the blurbs or reviews now that I’m going to start reading hopefully next year. I got the latest one with an ebook deal and added on the audio.

That’s wise as there’s a lot of character progression in these early books.
