the setup…
Former Baltimore homicide Detective Nate Burke can’t get over the guilt from helplessly watching his partner being killed in front of him. His last chance to save himself was to escape to Alaska, accepting a job as chief of police in a town called Lunacy. Little did he know that this quirky place would provide the respite and lifeline his tortured soul needed and that he’d fall in love with Meg Galloway, an unconventional bush pilot. When his rescue of three stranded teenagers from the icy mountains revealed the murdered and preserved body of a man who’d been missing for years, his dogged pursuit of the case grounds him even stronger in the town he now calls home and things get dangerous.the heart of the story…
I just knew the people living in a town called Lunacy were going to be interesting characters, especially as they referred to themselves as Lunatics. They delivered on that and then some. That made for a host of suspects as Nate had to pursue a literal cold case as the dead man was frozen in time when discovered. His romance with Meg stirred up the gossip but she was perfect for him as she was so no nonsense and just what he needed.the narration…
It took a while to adjust to Gary Littman’s style but he provided lots of distinctive voices for the town’s quirky characters that felt right. He gave a lively performance and I enjoyed his storytelling.the bottom line…
The setting is just as strong a character as the people in the town. The weather was frightful as most of it takes place during the winter but the vistas breathtaking. The case was challenging and Nate’s salvation from his romance with Meg and finding his place in this odd little community made for a really great story. I was captivated by it all.
