the setup…
I learned in the prequel how important family is to Private Investigator Margo Angelhart but in the ensuing years, a lot has changed. She’s estranged from the family private investigation practice she helped create and her beloved father is in prison. Margo is still solo but her practice is doing well enough that she’s no longer bartending. She’s managing two cases, one where she’s assisting an abused wife disappear with her two young children and another where the client suspects her husband of cheating. When the second one intersects with one of her family’s cases, Margo has to find common ground and work with and accept help from Angelhart Investigations…especially when things get dangerous.
the heart of the story…
I like stories with multiple plot lines and both brought tension and suspense, especially when the abusive husband goes on a tear to find his family. Margo’s other case had so many tentacles, twists and turns I had to hang on to keep up. Even better was the interaction with her family as they worked together and through their issues. It was clear they were stronger together.
the narration…
I’ll listen to anything Hillary Huber narrates so this was audio heaven for me. Her tone and storytelling skills are just…outstanding.
the bottom line…
This is classic Brennan, immersing me in the story right at the start and endearing the continuing characters to me by the end. The cases were highly intriguing and even though these are PIs, they behave like law enforcement in their procedurals…well, at least Margo’s family does. I’m all in with this series!
