It’s been a few months since FBI Agent Nikki Hunt almost lost her life capturing the Frost killer and suffered other tragic losses in the process. She’s returning to work when she’s called to a scene by boyfriend Rory Todd after he and his construction crew discovered a body during an excavation. The body was in a trunk buried deep in the ground and Rory later tells her he believes it’s his high school ex-girlfriend Becky Anderson who went missing in 1997. Nikki knows she’ll need to take a backseat to the investigation as Rory will be a person of interest. Could he be involved?
the heart of the story…
It’s not normally Nikki’s nature to step aside as she’s proven in the past but after the recent disasters, she showed remarkable restraint while trying to be supportive to Rory. It’s a tough case, especially as he’s being secretive and uncooperative. Nikki is also trying to heal emotionally, along with daughter Lacey who has bonded with Rory and his family. The case gets complicated when it’s discovered that Becky was pregnant, the baby might have been Rory’s and is linked to two other teenaged girls found murdered.

Kate Handford is solidly the voice of this series and I’m always going to listen to the books. Her storytelling skills are outstanding.
the bottom line…
What started out to be a fairly straightforward case turns into something gnarly and complex, muddied by the links to an uncooperative Rory Todd and another missing person case. Nikki is tested both personally and professionally but maintains her balance. It’s another story I found hard to put down.

It’s not working on my iPad but does work on my iPhone. It’s not the first time this has happened but definitely the longest. It’s been two days now.
