the setup…
Tom and Alice Bell are on their way from Seattle to the 1976 Montreal Olympics, leisurely traveling cross country in their Winnebago. They’re both recovering from a recent tragedy but Alice has been struggling. While at a campground in Hope, they meet a young couple who are hitchhiking in their direction. Tom offers “Ocean” and “Blue” shelter near their RV for the night and a ride in the morning. Little did they know that their trip of a lifetime would be far different from the one they’d planned as these hitchikers weren’t even close to the innocents they pretended to be.
the heart of the story…
Alice provides most of the narrative and her initial instincts about giving these two a ride were on target. Things get rough fairly quickly when Ocean and Blue’s true identities are discovered, too late to escape them. Alice has to keep her wits about her as Blue’s violent nature is never far from being triggered. There were so many dangerous moments, keeping my tension high as I braced myself for what was coming next…rescue or more misses.
the narration…
Lindsey Dorcus and Moniqua Plante are new-to-me narrators and I was highly impressed with how they gave voice to their characters and others, as well as their impressive storytelling skills. They brought this story to life…even more than I wanted!
the bottom line…
I went into this knowing it would scare me silly and it did. But I couldn’t put it down, needing to know how it would play out. Buckle up for this one because it’s not like any RV ride you’ve ever experienced.

You gave me the heebie jeebies just reading your review, Jo. I discovered Chevy Stevens years ago and have read all her books except this one. I will remedy that shortly. Excellent review.
