A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, Performed by Patrick Stewart @sirpatstew @simon.audio @simonaudio.bsky.social #AChristmasCarol #BookSky

It’s a cold, harsh Christmas Eve in London and Ebenezer Scrooge hates the season. He’s a crotchety old (and wealthy) miser who has just turned away two men asking for donations to help the poor (Scrooge could easily help), and turned down an invitation to dinner from his nephew Fred. He grudgingly let his put upon clerk, Bob Cratchit, have the day off with pay. That night, he’s visited by the spirit of his former business partner, Jacob Marley, who died seven years ago and is wandering the earth bound in the chains of his greed and love of money from when he was alive. He tells Scrooge to be prepared for visits from the Ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Christmas Yet to Come. Through them, Scrooge gets to see the repercussions of a life squandered in pursuit of money and the people he lost as a result of his actions. The view of the future is enough to have him awaken a changed man.

I’ve never read this story, having seen countless screen productions and embraced the chance to listen to this production narrated by the wonderful Patrick Stewart. I enjoyed his performance and it’s a different experience listening to the words crafted by Dickens. It’s a cautionary tale in any era and it’s no wonder this story is timeless.
