the setup…
FBI Agent Gardner Camden is back with the PAR (Patterns and Recognition) Unit, a team of agents who have unique and unusual analytical skills that give them an edge in solving difficult cases. It’s been a year and now Gardner heads the group and they’ve relocated to Jacksonville, Florida. They’re currently trying to get an inside track on an underground militia who are stockpiling weapons and planning some sort of domestic attack. When their confidential informant is murdered but not by the militia, not only do they lose their inside man but are led down a path to another seemingly unconnected FBI case.
the heart of the story…
I like puzzles and am quite good at them but this team’s skills are beyond next level. It was fascinating to see how Gardner’s mind works as he assimilates situations. You have to pay attention because he’s quick about it, too. And it’s not just him as the rest of the team have their own mental bag of tricks. But, their limits are tested with two cases that are geographically disparate and baffling.
the narration…
I’m so glad that Will Damron is the voice of the series as he “gets” Gardner and makes him feel real. His storytelling is perfect.
the bottom line…
As soon as I finished the first book last year, I wanted this one. Now I’m pining for more. The cases are incredibly complicated but it doesn’t matter as it’s all about how adept these agents are in dissecting issues and forming resolutions in the moment. While their colleagues may refer to them as nerds, those same people have a healthy respect for their skills. I know I do and I’ll never tire of their stories.
