the setup…
Veronica is a marketing consultant who was unfairly let go from her last job. She signs in to what was supposed to be a job interview but turns out to be another company’s Zoom meeting. She keeps her profile dark and listens in to an awful marketing presentation. In her current mood, she pipes in and delivers a scathing analysis before signing off. Jude, the CEO, tracks her down because her feedback was pretty refreshing, enough so that he hires her on as a consultant. It’s all by email and they continue chatting and it turns personal after a few days. Little do they know that they’ve actually met in person before.
the heart of the story…
Veronica has a wicked wit that Jude really gets, as did I. Loved their banter and that Zoom meeting was hilarious. And, I didn’t have to wait to long for the twisty moment.
the narration…
Dominique Salvacion sounded exactly as I would have imagined Veronica and Andrew Gibson was a very appealing Jude. Loved their pacing and storytelling.
the bottom line…
While this is based (sort of) on the dreaded miscommunication angle, it didn’t linger there too long and it played out pretty nicely. I love these little themed novellas, especially in the hands of talented writers. Perfect start to the collection.
