My Husband’s Wife by Alice Feeney @alicewriterland @alicefeeney.com @belpowley @henryrowleyy @richardcarmitage @macmillan.audio @macmillanaudio.bsky.social #MyHusbandsWife

the setup…
It all starts with a key…one that won’t open a door that it should have. Eden Fox returns home from a run on the night her artwork is scheduled to be exhibited in a local gallery. When she inserts her key, it doesn’t turn and the door is eventually opened by a woman who looks a lot like her and says she’s Eden Fox! Then husband Harrison Wolf comes to the door and says he doesn’t know her either. Six months earlier, Olivia (Birdy) Bird receives a devastating health diagnosis. Then a controversial clinic who claims they can predict your death date delivers hers. Birdy decides to return to Spyglass, the family home in Hope Falls in Cornwall that she just learned she’d inherited.

the heart of the story…
“Everybody lies and everybody dies.” It’s a recurring refrain throughout the story and you’d be wise to remember that through the end. I tried really hard to figure out who was lying about what but routinely kept being surprised. Lots of “wait a minute” moments and whiplash! Even at the end when I thought it was all settled (though I had questions), my brain was delivered another blow.

the narration…
I was already excited about the slate of narrators (Bel Powley, Henry Rowley & Richard Armitage) but didn’t know about the sound effects! This was a fantastic listening experience with highly skilled storytellers (and accomplished liars!) and atmospheric enhancements.

the bottom line…
I go into any Feeney story fully prepared to experience some mind bending twists but this was something else! Feeling clever, I thought I had this figured out early on and later had my ego smacked down. This was a really good time and I finished it in a day. It’s my favorite to date and that bar was pretty high.
