the setup…
Welcome to Crestmore Estates, a wealthy enclave of San Francisco. Five years ago, three of its residents went missing and have not been heard from since. Andrea Kendal is married to Eric, a prominent surgeon. They have two sons, Cameron and Ryder, her oldest from another relationship. His first wife Roxanne is one of the missing, presumed dead after leaving behind a bloody scene. Sara Batcher is a highly successful business owner whose husband David inexplicably disappeared one night. His fate is unknown. Katie Morrow is married to Mark, a high profile sports agent whose first wife Willow purportedly divorced him and left town without a word or trace. Now a human bone has been found on the golf course where all their homes are located. Does it belong to one of the missing?
the heart of the story…
Of course, the human remains can belong to any of these missing spouses and all seem to maybe have a motive. I got hooked fast and the three wives provide most of the narratives. Their stories are so rich and juicy, I didn’t even focus on deducing the mystery. I kept confusing Katie and Andrea until they became more distinctive, a little bump in my journey.
the narration…
Moniqua Plante is an excellent storyteller and gave a stellar performance here. I love her voice tone.
the bottom line…
Torre is an auto read right now and I can count on some crazy twists, turns and surprises. I love how the early part of the story quietly built the foundation, developing these characters nicely. There were a couple of jaw dropping moments despite my being somewhat prepared and the ending was quite clever. Though it might not be justice, it felt poetic. I had a good time, almost finishing it in one day.
