the setup…
The Conover family is gathering at their Maiden Pond summer home in Purity, Maine to scatter the remains of their patriarch, George, who recently died. It’s been years since youngest son Ethan has returned to that place and the first time for his wife Susan and her sixteen-year old daughter Zoe. He doesn’t have good memories of those summers spent here but Zoe is excited to go swimming in that pond. She does so soon after they arrive but when she fails to return home later that evening, it’s clear she’s missing. Acting Police Chief Jo Thibodeau has her hands full, especially when Maggie Bird and her “associates” get involved after her neighbor becomes the prime suspect.
the heart of the story…
Maggie and her friends (Declan, Ben, Ingrid & Lloyd), former CIA operatives, have continued their regular book club and martini meetings and can’t resist offering the young police chief their unsolicited help, especially with the search for Zoe Conover. I loved how they insinuated themselves with deft and skill as Jo certainly needed them. Their sleuthing took the case in some shocking directions.
the narration…
Hillary Huber is another of my most favorite narrators with her sultry tone and excellent storytelling skills. I’m loving her being the voice of the series.
the bottom line…
It was riveting stuff to follow all the bends and turns of the investigation, especially after a particularly significant event added intriguing layers. I LOVE the Martini Club and their sneaky way of assisting the capable but inexperienced Jo Thibodeau. I can’t wait to see what’s next for this uneasy alliance.
