the setup…
Daphne Vincent is a librarian living in Waning Bay, Michigan with her fiancé Peter Collins, preparing for her wedding next week. Peter goes out to his bachelor party and returns with stunning news…he’s suddenly realized his best friend since the third grade, Petra Comer (she was at the party), is his “soulmate” and they’re going to be together. And, oh! She needs to leave the house she lovingly decorated but is in his name. This all happened while he was recounting the funny story of how they had met! Desperate for a place to stay, Daphne becomes the roommate of Miles Nowak…Petra’s ex-boyfriend. Now that’s a funny story!the heart of the story…
With a start like this, I got hooked immediately and it never let up. Daphne may be the practical one but she’s got a wicked wit that created lots laugh-out-loud moments in situations where you’d typically be in tears. Miles is laid back and stunningly handsome but somehow lacks that self possession that often makes men like him less attractive. People are naturally drawn to him. They’re an odd pair that gradually move from commiseration buddies, to good friends and on to something more.the narration…
Who else but Julia Whelan could tell this story! She was Daphne, delivering her lines perfectly. And she was Miles, endearing me to him while nailing everybody else. She’s also the penultimate storyteller.the bottom line…
Now this is a rom com! I experienced every emotion throughout Daphne’s discovery of her true self. She’s got quite the backstory that makes sense of how she landed with someone like Peter and her journey getting there was often funny but deeply emotional and heartbreaking at times. Miles was lovely and their transition to a romance was elegant and timed just right. Another book that lives up to the hype!

Thanks, Marialyce💜 It’s all about Daphne who is quite witty, even in the tough moments. The fun comes with Miles and that apartment, her new friends, etc. Her self discovery was wonderful and not misty eyed.

Wonderful review, Jo. I am on the library list for this one, but 4 months wait time predicted. 😲 I know I have lots to read or listen to in the meantime, but I’m not sure if I’m that patient.
