For the past two years, Audra Pearsall has protected her father, a noted historian who now has dementia, from the public. She’s skilled in her own right and has researched and published papers in his name to continue receiving financial support. As it became more difficult to shield her father, Audra moved the household from Baltimore to Heartbreak Creek where they own property she’s never seen. Along the way, they meet Ethan Hardesty, a representative from the railroad who’s heading in the same direction. He’s definitely charmed by Audra, she not so much of him as it’s her goal to maintain her independence in this new territory.
I liked Audra soon after she was introduced in the story. She’s resourceful, smart and loyal to a fault to her father and his legacy. Her extreme sacrifice was heartwarming. It took a little longer to warm up to Ethan as he masked his true nature under a veneer of sarcasm and diversion. Once I learned the reason for his behavior, he too became a favorite. I couldn’t help but root for these two as they inured themselves to the realities of the town with an elusive killer.
The serial killings were brutal and downright scary, adding a heightened level of tension and suspense I hadn’t anticipated. I was also thrilled to see the characters I loved from the connected series play significant roles and continue with the town objectives. It’s a really good story with romance, mystery, humor, excitement and thrills. Definitely continuing this series.
