Hard Pursuit by Pamela Clare @Pamela_Clare

Hard Pursuit
Cobra operative Malik Jones and ER nurse Kristi Chang were inseparable while at the Amundsen-Scott Station at the South Pole. He was there for a rescue assignment and when it was time for him to leave, she still had six months remaining on her contract. Both agreed to a no-strings relationship because their chosen careers wouldn’t facilitate anything else. She was headed to Nigeria next and he to whatever new international crisis demanded so they went their separate ways. Eighteen months later when Malik learns that Kristi’s been abducted and the State Department isn’t taking the lead in her rescue, he resigns and sets out on his own (with a little covert resource help from Cobra).

In the last book, I questioned whether the intense relationship between these two could just end in Antarctica so I was thrilled to see them resurface in this story. There were most definitely strings attached between these two…they just couldn’t acknowledge it. Kristi’s abduction was harrowing and I loved how she used her wits to not only survive but protect herself. Her rescue was spectacular…the first time. When she and Malik found themselves in trouble a second time, Kristi rose to the moment again and helped save not only herself but him, too.

I continue to appreciate the unusual settings in this series. The Nigerian culture was an important element, from the politics, the towns and villages to the people and wildlife. I felt fully immersed in it all and could imagine everything rather vividly. It was obviously well researched, which made it more exciting. Malik and Kristi’s relationship may have started because of their sexual compatibility but the partnership they created was something special. It is an outstanding story with epic proportions.
