Finlay Donovan is a divorced mother of two children under five years old and a struggling romantic suspense writer. Her ex-husband left her for their real estate agent and took most of their assets with him. Now on the morning she’s scheduled to meet with her agent to discuss the book she’s late on delivering, Finlay learns he’s let the nanny go. She’s definitely not killing it…until she’s overheard discussing her latest plot at the meeting with her agent and mistaken for a contract killer! She’s been unwittingly hired by a woman to get rid of her predator husband!
the heart of the story…
I couldn’t imagine how a suburban mom could stumble into being hired as a contract killer but you just had to be there. What happens after Finlay’s meeting with her “client” is one series of serendipitous moves after another. Finlay manages to get the nanny, Veronica (Vero) Ruiz, rehired and they fall into an odd partnership that not only works but is hilarious. These two brought out the best and worst in each other but at complementary moments. I loved Vero with her quirky wit and natural ability to get things done. Finlay is no slouch either and knows how to think on her feet and get herself out of some tricky situations.
the narration…
I’m definitely continuing this series on audio because the narrator has firmly imprinted the voices of Finlay and Vero in my head. I especially liked her interpretation of Vero and she just made the story sound even more incredible and credible at the same time. Outstanding performance.
the bottom line…
I’m late to this party and worried that it wouldn’t live up to the hype. My fears were unfounded as this is a story with really fresh angles and unpredictable paths. Most women will identify with Finlay’s life as a divorced single mother being mistreated by her ex and the new woman. Even when she was making questionable choices I couldn’t help rooting for her. And don’t get me started on Vero, who I adore! I can’t wait to see what’s next for these two because they killed it in this one.
