Streaming Sunday features TV series or movies adapted from books I’ve read, offered on at least one streaming service and I’ve watched.

Daisy Jones & the Six is based on the book of the same name by Taylor Jenkins Reid, which was the March 2019 selection by Reese Witherspoon’s Book Club. The 10-episode series was also produced by Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Amazon Studios. It stars Riley Keough as Daisy and Sam Claflin as Billy and was developed by Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber. It began streaming on Amazon Prime Video March 3.
The series has a large cast, primarily comprising the band, and I felt they represented their book characters nicely. Most were as I’d imagined them from the book, which still ranks as one of my all time favorites on audio as it also had full cast narration.
As much as I was excited about this being brought to screen, I then worried about the story in my head being translated in a way that would mar that memory. But, Witherspoon’s habit of being true to the book in screen adaptations carried through to this project. Riley Keough embodied Daisy in every way and Sam Claflin was amazing as Billy. The format of the book where it was presented as a documentary style using interviews translated perfectly on film! The transitions were seamless with the backstories relevant to the interviews.
What I was unprepared for, though, was the magic of Daisy & Billy performing resounding throughout the series! It felt like magic in the book and I never imagined it could be captured so wonderfully on film. And, the authenticity of the musical performances were so outstanding that they’re actually performing in real life.
Bottom line…those who loved the book will be overjoyed at the adaptation to screen. It’s so true to the story that I had to take a pause for a couple of weeks when it got close to the parts I found difficult to handle in the book. And if you haven’t read the book, you’ll still find the series compelling. But, why deny yourself the wonder of listening to the most amazing book before you see this series?

I ended up enjoying the TV series much more than the book, and I think it’s because the documentary format on paper isn’t my favorite. I should have listened to it on audio to begin with. The music and performances in the show were amazing!

I’m really happy you enjoyed the TV series, too, Diana💜 There’s a definite difference of opinion about the book depending on whether you listened to it or read it in print/eBook. I always opt for Reid’s audiobooks as she chooses the best narrators.

I had trouble getting into the book based on the style and number of characters, so I think the translation to television should be a good fit for me. Thanks for the recommendation, Jo.

I tried the book but couldn’t get into it at the time. I hope to try again. The chances of me watching tv are slim even when I really want to watch. I’m glad it turned out so well though.

I couldn’t agree more. I had no idea that the music and the chemistry on the show will be so on-point and even more! I had loved the book but loved the show even more! I have been listening to the soundtrack on repeat and this show introduced me to Patti Smith after I listened to the title track and Ive been fan girling over her since then!
