the setup…
Alexis Montgomery is an ER doctor at a Minneapolis hospital that bears her family name. She comes from a family of renowned surgeons and is expected to continue the family legacy, along with twin brother Derek. But one night she has a car mishap in the little town of Wakan as she’s returning home from Iowa. Daniel Grant, a local carpenter and manager of a B & B, provides rescue…and later much more.
the heart of the story…
Alexis has never had a one night stand and intended for her encounter with Daniel to remain just that. He’s 28-years old, ten years younger than her, and comes from a completely different world from her own privileged one. But, their connection is impossible to ignore or sever. Despite her efforts to keep it casual, their feelings deepen and she must face the inevitable decision…her career or his world that she’s gradually become a part of because he’d never survive hers.
the narration…
I expected Julia Whelan to be great as Alexis (she was) but was unprepared for how perfect Zachary Webber was as Daniel! Loved them both and combined they did some fantastic storytelling.
the bottom line…
I recently read a short story by the author, my first introduction, and wanted more. Now I know what all the fuss is about because I absolutely loved this story. It’s not only a lovely romance but it’s layered with conflicts that felt real, authentic and too gnarly for simple resolutions, along with many funny moments. These were two compelling and extremely likeable characters that I rooted for from the onset. This blasted through my already high expectations.
