Road Trip by Mary Kay Andrews @marykayandrews @theveronicacat @macmillan.audio @macmillanaudio.bsky.social #RoadTrip

the setup…
Maeve Dunigan has cared for her mother the last few years and now that Mary Helen Dunigan has passed, the older prodigal daughter Therese has returned home for the funeral. It’s been seven years since Maeve last saw her and they are polar opposites. While they struggle to get along, both are united in their commitment (and need) to restore Mary Helen’s estate. She left them some cash to pursue the origins of a century old painting brought from Ireland by their great grandmother. Therese determines it could possibly be worth millions so they decide to go to Ireland to research their ancestry and the painting’s provenance.

the heart of the story…
This isn’t your traditional road trip (thankfully) and the trek to Tarrymore had its series of challenges. I found the family lore fascinating and as I lost my heart to Ireland years ago, the setting was equally appealing. It’s a small village with lots of colorful characters who run the gamut in receptivity. Maeve and Therese find common ground as they discover their roots and work to unravel the mystery.

the narration…
Kathleen McInerney is one of my favorite narrators and storytellers, ideal for this one. She provided distinctive voices for those important to the tale, especially those with accents, delivering a great performance.

the bottom line…
This is a lovely family saga that brings together two estranged sisters to explore their ancestry and the true history behind that infamous painting. There’s a bit of mystery and romance to add color to the story and I was swept up in it all while being immersed in this Irish town. It was a wonderful listening experience.
