the setup…
After finishing up one case, NYSPD homicide detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas is soon called to the scene of a ghastly murder at the home of Larry Chu, director of bioengineering at Banner-Wyst, a major scientific research and development global enterprise. He was literally destroyed by someone with brute force and without a weapon, enough for Eve to know this was personal and fury filled. When a second victim is later discovered at another highly secured home and bears the same level of body destruction as Chu and who also works for the same company, Eve and her team race against time to figure out the why, knowing there will probably be more murders to come and to figure out who’s next.

the heart of the story…
The stage is set in the prologue where, even though there’s a strong clue as to the who and why, finding the perpetrator and figuring out the things in between are taxing. The police procedural aspect is exceptional given the secretive nature of Banner-Wyst and the skill of the killer to circumvent the best security for these über wealthy victims. The level of rage and fury in the execution of these victims is like none other I’ve seen in this series and that’s saying something.

the bottom line…
It’s always a quandary when there’s equal empathy for the perpetrator and the victims. I liked how the moral dilemma was positioned, even in the face of incredible brutality and Eve is challenged on every level. It wasn’t all horror as the Great House Project is complete and the celebration was uniquely Mavis with a few surprises. It’s a tough story but the continued presence and evolution of the continuing characters is what has me “coming home” to what feels like family. Robb continues to find ways to keep this series not only relevant but must read.
